The Founding of Ardua Hall

A Forced Cooperation The Selection Commander Judd selects four women to organize the female sphere: Aunt Lydia, Aunt Elizabeth, Aunt Helena, and Aunt Vidala. All have been broken by the Thank Tank or the stadium. They are told to create a system of control. The Power Struggle From the beginning, there is tension. Vidala is a true believer and sees herself as the leader. Lydia is more pragmatic. Elizabeth and Helena are weaker. Lydia quickly establishes dominance by demanding a separate sphere and by winning Judd's favor. The Seeds of Enmity Vidala resents Lydia's authority. She begins to scheme against her. She allies with Elizabeth and Helena, but they are unreliable. The conflict is a constant undercurrent at Ardua Hall, with each Aunt trying to gain advantage.

Vidala's Accusation

A Suspicious Eye The Tattoo Vidala notices Nicole's tattoo and suspects she is a Mayday infiltrator. She demands that Nicole be interrogated. Lydia deflects, saying it is just a foolish conversion symbol. But Vidala is not convinced. The Egg Offering Vidala plants evidence at Lydia's statue, hoping to frame Elizabeth for idolatry. She tells Lydia that Elizabeth is the traitor. Lydia plays along, pretending to believe her. But she has her own surveillance cameras that show Vidala planting the evidence. The Warning Lydia warns Commander Judd that Vidala is no longer reliable. She asks for an order to protect Jade from interrogation. Judd agrees, but only to secure Nicole for his own purposes. The conflict between the Aunts is a distraction that allows Lydia to proceed with her plan.

Vidala's Stroke and Silence

The Final Blow The Attack Vidala tries to stop Nicole and Agnes at the statue. Nicole punches her, causing a stroke. Vidala is found in a coma. She wakes briefly and accuses Lydia, but she cannot speak clearly. The Cover-Up Lydia visits Vidala in the hospital. She claims Vidala accused Elizabeth. Elizabeth is terrified. Lydia then suggests that Vidala's allergies might cause an asthma attack. She leaves a vial of morphine, hinting at a way to silence Vidala permanently. The End of the Conflict Vidala is effectively neutralized. Elizabeth and Helena are cowed. Lydia has won the internal battle, but she knows that the external threat from Judd is more pressing. The conflict among the Aunts is a side note to the larger collapse of Gilead.
